Drew Nicholson and Larry Laliberte were our speakers on June 8, discussing “The Weird, the Wacky and the Wonderful: Some gems from a Dutchess County collection”.  They put together a very interesting PowerPoint presentation that showcased a number of rare and fascinating covers from their collections.

Some of the highlights of this presentation included: early free franked letters; a five cent 1847 stamp tied on cover by a Poughkeepsie datestamp; a very ornate illustrated advertising cover from Eastman’s Business College; and a cover with three 10 cent stamps used in 1860 from Poughkeepsie to France.

They also showed: a rare 1877 use of a Palmer & Clark experimental machine cancel from Poughkeepsie; a stampless cover sent from Amenia Union with a Housatonic railroad cancel; other advertising covers used in Dutchess County; and a scarce cover (with a whaling connection) mailed from Mabbettsville via Panama to Peru.
